Sunday marks fourth day in a row of 100-plus new COVID-19 cases in Sedgwick County

Sunday was the fourth day in a row in which more than 100 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in the Wichita area.

The Sedgwick County Health Department reported 172 cases of the disease caused by the coronavirus, pushing the total for the pandemic to 3,646.

Active cases rose by 142 from Saturday and now total 2,369. There were 30 more recoveries, totaling 1,241. No new deaths were reported, keeping the number at 36.

The number of people tested rose by 873 and now totals 50,284.

The positive test percentage, which is a 14-day rolling average, has dipped over the past two days. It hit a high of 13.97% on Thursday, then dropped to 13.31% on Friday and 13.08% on Saturday.

Epidemiologists have determined that 16 of the 172 new cases had been in close contact with another confirmed COVID-19 patient. The source of exposure for the other 156 cases remains under investigation.

More than two-thirds of the new cases were attributed to patients between 20 and 59 years old. Here’s the breakdown by age group:

  • Infant to age 19: 29 new cases, bringing total to 506.
  • 20-39: 78 new cases, now totals 1,528.

  • 40-59: 41 new cases, with total of 1,004.

  • 60-79: 17 new cases, now totals 449.

  • 80 and older: seven new cases, with total of 159.

Sunday’s reported increase of 172 cases follows increases of 171 on Saturday, 189 on Friday and 196 on Thursday.

The 728 new cases over the past four days is about a 25% jump in the total.
