Coronavirus cases pass 2,000 — more than half are active, Sedgwick County reports
Local public health officials report more than 2,000 cases of COVID-19 in Sedgwick County, and more than half of those are active.
The Sedgwick County Health Department reported 2,023 total cases of the coronavirus disease on Sunday, which was an increase of 64 from Saturday. There are 1,124 active cases of COVID-19, which is an increase of 55. There were nine new recoveries, bringing the total to 871. There have been 38,436 people tested, which is up by 513.
There have been 28 deaths in the county attributed to COVID-19. No new deaths have been reported since June 25.
New hospitalization information from Wichita area hospitals is reported on Mondays.
The percent of tests that come back positive increased from 8.24% on Thursday to 8.74% on Friday, which are the most recent days with data available. The percentages are a rolling 14-day average.
Though Sunday was the first time local health officials reported more than 2,000 cases, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment had reported that Sedgwick County passed 2,000 cases on Friday. Officials have said discrepancies between the state and local agencies can be due to reporting delays.
Of the 64 new cases, epidemiologists have determined one patient was in close contact with another confirmed COVID-19 patient. The other 63 cases are still under investigation for the source of exposure to the virus.
No new coronavirus clusters have been reported, keeping the total at 19.
People younger than 40 years old account for about 54% of cases in the county. The infant to 19-year-old age group has 282 cases or about 13.9% of all cases in the county. The 20-39 age group has 810 cases, or about 40% of all cases. The 40-59 age group has 547 cases or about 27%, the 60-79 age group 273 cases or about 13.5% and the 80 years old and older age group has 111 cases or about 5.5%
