As COVID-19 cases were ‘exploding’ in Sedgwick County, these ZIP codes saw biggest jumps

Several ZIP codes in the Wichita area saw bigger percent increases in cases of COVID-19 during the week that Sedgwick County health officials said the number of cases was “exploding.”

Statistics from the Sedgwick County Health Department’s coronavirus pandemic dashboard show there was a 37.6% increase in cases between last Monday and this Monday. Thirteen ZIP codes had percentage increases greater than the county as a whole.

The biggest was in 67211, which hit 51 cases following an increase of 112.5%. It was the only ZIP code to double its cases over the last week. The ZIP code is southeast of downtown and generally bounded by Douglas, Market, Pawnee and Hillside.

The southeast Wichita ZIP code of 67207, which also includes about half of Eastborough, had the biggest jump in actual cases. It went up by 42 cases to a total of 93. The area is generally bounded by Douglas, Woodlawn, Pawnee and 127th Street East

The Wichita ZIP code of 67203 has the most confirmed cases at 118. It includes the Riverside area and parts of Delano, as well as areas farther north and west. It is generally bounded by Douglas, Main, 21st Street and West Street.

Two other ZIP codes have at least 100 cases: 67212 in west Wichita and 67204 in the north part of the city.

The online ZIP code map’s data is updated on Mondays. It can be accessed online at www.sedgwickcounty.org/covid-19/.

As of Monday, the Sedgwick County Health Department reported 1,597 total cases. On June 29, there were 1,161 cases. There was an increase of 436 cases or 37.6% over the last week.

Last week, Adrienne Byrne, the county’s health director, said COVID-19 cases were “exploding” in the Wichita area. The county’s public health officer, Garold Minns, added that the increase in cases is not due to an increase in testing.

This week, Kansas Department of Health and Environment Secretary Lee Norman suggested there may be a connection between the state having relatively few restrictions to slow the coronavirus pandemic and the fast spread of the virus and its disease here.

A full list of ZIP codes in Sedgwick County is available below, including the population, number of tests administered, confirmed cases and testing rate per 10,000 people.

The county’s online map does not list the actual change or the percentage change in cases over time. The Eagle calculated the values using the number of cases listed in county data on Monday and June 29.

Testing rates based on 20 or fewer tests are considered unreliable by the county health department. For total tests and total confirmed cases, if a ZIP code has five or fewer of either category, the county does not report the exact number. No exact percent change could be calculated in those instances.

Two ZIP codes — for McConnell Air Force Base and Wichita State University — do not have data because they have no population.

Many of the ZIP code areas in Sedgwick County extend into neighboring counties. A Sedgwick County official previously told The Eagle that the ZIP code population data on the map includes people who live in other counties, but the number of tests and cases only include Sedgwick County residents. The testing rate includes Sedgwick County residents who were tested compared to the total population of the ZIP code, including other counties.

Names of towns from other counties are included solely as a reference for the relative location of the ZIP code.
