Sedgwick County has 450 active cases of COVID-19 — a 257% increase in one month

The number of active cases of COVID-19 in Sedgwick County on Sunday was a 257% increase from one month ago.

The Sedgwick County Health Department reported 450 active cases on Sunday, up 53 from Saturday. The number of total cases also rose by 53 — or about 5% in one day — as no additional recoveries or deaths were reported.

There have now been 1,120 total cases, 28 deaths and 642 recoveries. There have been 28,301 county residents tested, which was an increase of 730 tests.

The county has seen a 257% increase in active cases since May 28, when 126 active cases were reported.

Active cases are equal to total cases minus recoveries minus deaths. The number had previously peaked at 176 on April 29 before declining for most of May. The count has been rising since all mandatory restrictions on the state and local economies were lifted in late May.

The percentage of tests that come back positive declined for most of May as the number of tests increased. But after hitting a high of 12% on April 19 and a low of just under 1% on May 26, the percentage has risen to 4.5%. The last time the rolling 14-day average percent of positive tests was higher was on May 10, when it was just over 5%.

Epidemiologists have not identified the source of coronavirus exposure for any of the 53 new cases reported on Sunday.

The local public health department’s mobile testing unit has two stops planned this week. On Monday, it will be at the Colwich Fire Department, 310 S. Second, from 9 a.m. to noon. It will be at Pathway Church in Goddard, 18800 W. Kellogg, from 9 a.m. to noon on Wednesday. Appointments can be scheduled by calling United Way of the Plains at 211, though walk-ups are also permitted.
