Which Wichita area ZIP codes have the most COVID-19 cases? Here’s a map.

A new map from the Sedgwick County Health Department provides the most detailed information on the locations most affected by the coronavirus and COVID-19 in the Wichita area.

The map available online through the health department’s COVID-19 dashboard breaks down data by ZIP code. It shows the population, tests administered, confirmed cases and testing rate.

The feature was added on Wednesday. Its data was current as of Monday and will be updated weekly.

The ZIP code with the most confirmed cases — 67212 — is also the most populous area of the state’s largest city. The ZIP code in west Wichita is generally bounded by Douglas, West Street, 21st North and 119th West. The ZIP code has a population of 44,824 and 42 confirmed cases. The 654 tests administered gives it a testing rate of 145.9 per 10,000 people.

The 67212 ZIP code includes at least one cluster at The Manor Nursing Home at Park West, 505 N. Maize. Public health officials have not said how many residents and staff members have been infected there.

The two ZIP codes with the highest testing rates have much smaller populations.

Downtown Wichita has the highest testing rate. The 67202 ZIP code is generally bounded by Kellogg, Washington, Central and the Arkansas River. It has seven confirmed cases out of a population of 1,671. The 50 tests puts its testing rate at 299.2 per 10,000 people.

The Wichita Work Release Facility, 401 S. Emporia, has been identified by the county as a cluster. The Kansas Department of Corrections reports 48 residents and seven staff members of the minimum-security state prison have tested positive.

The ZIP code with the second-highest testing rate is 67026, which is the Clearwater area. There have been 105 tests out of 4,802 residents, putting its testing rate at 218.7. There have been 27 confirmed cases.

The area includes the nursing home cluster at Clearwater Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, 620 Wood Ave. The outbreak is responsible for at least 61 cases and eight deaths.

It is unclear why the number of cases at the nursing home and the prison are higher than the total for all residents of the ZIP codes listed on the map.

The 67206 ZIP code also lists fewer confirmed cases than what has been reported at a cluster in the area. The county map lists 15 confirmed cases in 67206. However, the nursing home cluster at Chisholm Place, 1859 N. Webb, is responsible for at least 46 infected patients and seven deaths.

The area — which is generally bounded by Woodlawn, Douglas, 127th East and 21st North — has a population of 16,106 with 251 tests and a testing rate of 155.8.

The only other cluster that has been publicly identified is the Mel Hambelton Ford dealership and service center at Kellogg and 119th West. Residents of the surrounding ZIP code — 67209 — have had five or fewer confirmed cases. There have been 206 tests with a population of 13,380, putting the testing rate at 154. The area is generally bounded by Douglas, West, Pawnee and 119th West.

The map as originally published listed the testing rates per 10,000 people, but labeled it as per 100,000 people. The map was corrected on Thursday after The Eagle inquired about inaccurate numbers.

Testing rates based on 20 or fewer tests are considered unreliable by the county health department.

Many of the ZIP code areas in Sedgwick County extend into neighboring counties. A Sedgwick County official told The Eagle that the ZIP code population data on the map includes people who live in other counties, but the number of tests and cases only include Sedgwick County residents. The testing rate includes Sedgwick County residents who were tested compared to the total population of the ZIP code, including other counties.

Names of towns from other counties are included solely as a reference for the relative location of the ZIP code.
