Sedgwick County coronavirus cases double in two days, now at 42 as Kansas tops 300
The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Sedgwick County has more than doubled in two days as the state number has topped 300.
Kansas Department of Health and Environment officials said in a Sunday news release that there are 42 known cases of COVID-19 in Sedgwick County. The new number comes after 20 cases had been confirmed on Friday and 33 cases on Saturday.
County health officials said on Friday that the disease had officially reached the point of “community spread” in Sedgwick County, meaning that it was being spread primarily from resident to resident.
Statewide, 319 cases of the novel coronavirus have been found in patients ranging in age from 4 to 95. Six deaths in Kansas have been attributed to the coronavirus pandemic. Sedwick County has the third-most cases, behind 101 in Johnson County and 55 in Wyandotte County.
Nationwide, the number of positive cases has risen from 104,865 to 125,313.
In the Wichita area, seven cases have been confirmed in Reno County, three in Butler County, one in Sumner County and one in Harvey County.
Sedgwick County residents who have general questions about COVID-19 or who think they need to be tested can call United Way of the Plains at 211.
Gov. Laura Kelly has issued a statewide stay-at-home order, which goes into effect after midnight. It replaces a similar order issued last week by the Sedgwick County public health officer.
Health researchers predict the coronavirus pandemic will peak in Kansas around April 24.
