It’s usually just a Christmas thing, but Friends will relight its clock tower tonight
It’s one of Wichita’s most recognizable architectural features, and seeing it is one of the highlights of driving on Kellogg.
But the clock tower on Friends University’s historic Davis Hall is usually only lighted up during the Christmas holidays.
The community could use a boost, though, administrators at the university decided this week, so they’ve decided to relight the clock tower for the time being as a “symbol of hope and encouragement.”
There will be a virtual lighting ceremony at 7:45 p.m. this evening, Friday, March 27. People are encouraged to watch it online on the Friends University website, friends.edu/light-of-hope. There’s a virtual countdown happening on the page now.
Friends is also encouraging people around the community to put lights back up on their houses and to share photos of their efforts on Friends social media platforms using the hashtag #LightUpICT.
In recent years, the university has illuminated the lights that line the clock tower only from early December to mid-January. But they’re happy to make an exception during the coronavirus pandemic, when many people are stuck at home feeling isolated.
“We haven’t set an end date on this,” said Laura Fuller, Friends’ public relations manager. “This is just some small part our Friends community can do to help shine a light of hope on the Wichita community.”
