The number of Wichita homeowners who are “underwater” on their houses, meaning they owe more on the mortgage than the house is worth, continues to decline.

In Wichita, 3,837 residences, or 3.8 percent of all houses, were underwater in the first quarter of 2016, according to real estate data firm CoreLogic.

That’s down from 4,202, or 4.2 percent, in the same quarter of 2015.

Another 1,205 properties, or 1.2 percent, were nearly underwater in the first quarter compared with 1,632, or 1.6 percent, a year ago.
