State seeks $266,460 in back taxes from west-side hotel
The Kansas Department of Revenue has filed tax warrants totaling $266,460 against the owner of Hawthorn Suites, 2405 N. Ridge Road.
The bulk of the back taxes are $140,699 in sales tax and $124,199 in transient guest tax for three of the past four years.
The owner of the hotel is Drue Inc. of Centralia, Wash.
Drue owner Sam Patel said the hotel is not in any financial trouble.
The company has been paying the taxes, he said, but documents supporting the company’s position in the dispute with the state are in storage, and he is waiting to hear from the state on what is needed so the documents can be recovered.
“It’s a paperwork issue,” he said.
