Business Q & A

Updated: 5 questions with Dennis Depenbusch

Editor’s note: This story has been updated to correct the spelling of Ulterius Technologies founder Alexandros Cavgalar.

Dennis Depenbusch has been around the technology industry.

He has been CEO of Catalyst Lighting Group in Fort Worth, vice president for Euronet Worldwide in Europe, entrepreneur in residence for the Kansas Technology Enterprise Corp. in Kansas, and a technology and business consultant, among other jobs in Kansas and elsewhere.

For the last year and a half, he’s been CEO of Wichita start-up Ulterius Technologies. In that job, he’ll pitch the product and company to potential investors at the Great Plains Capital Conference in Wichita next week.

Depenbusch, 51, is married to Darci, and they have two sons.

Q. You’ve clearly been around. What brings you here?

A. I’m from Hutchinson … Our kids were of an age that we preferred to raise them here and was offered the opportunity at KTEC as entrepreneur in residence. After KTEC disappeared, I spent time consulting and eventually I was approached by (Wichita Technology Corp. President) Trish Brasted to help with Ulterius.

Q. What is Ulterius’ main product?

A. This product redefines networking by combining a router, a switch, firewall and wi-fi in one device at about five times the efficiency now on the market.

Q. What makes this company special?

A. This company has one of the most interesting technologies I’ve come across in Kansas. I have a real affinity to building value with technology companies in this state and to have founders as credible as they are – Alexandros Cavgalar and Robert Reif Jr. and Nitya Singh are Bell Labs alumni who were working for Lucent Technologies – was amazing. ... This isn’t a junior level deal. This is the major leagues.

Q. You’re a veteran; do you still get nervous pitching your product?

A. You still get nervous. If you’re not nervous you won’t present well. It drives my adreneline up and focuses me on what I am going to say.

Q. What are your expectations?

A. My hope at capital conferences is just to get the word out about the business, what we do and how we do it, and this is great way to do it. Plus, there is a audience that wants to know how we’ve progressed.
