The Wichita Sports Forum has been open less than a year, but it’s already looking for a new general manager.
Matt Baty says it’s not because he’s not happy.
“In fact, I’m more than happy.”
Baty is leaving, though, to become associate athletics director for the Williams Education Fund, marketing and sales at the University of Kansas.
“When your alma mater calls you, you gotta listen,” says Baty, who played baseball for the school.
“This is kind of the coveted job,” Baty says of his industry.
“It was a tough decision to pass up what I’m doing now,” he says. “We are seven months in, but my process started a year ago building from scratch.”
The Sports Forum, which is at Greenwich Place at K-96 and Greenwich, grew out of the troubled GoodSports project. A new group – Tymber Lee, John Wadsworth, Scott McLain, master developer Wichita Destination Developers and the city – took over the project from Florida developer Jerry Good last year. The Sports Forum was built quickly and was in operation by December.
“We built the foundation, and it’s strong, and it’s humming,” Baty says.
He reports to his new job on Aug. 15 but says he’ll be a phone call away to help a new manager.
“We have some very strong candidates already.”
Baty says it should be an “easy transition.”
He says he’ll return to Wichita for KU donor relations, and he can check in with the Sports Forum, too.
Now, though, Baty says he and his wife, who also is a KU graduate, are eager to return to Lawrence.
“It’s a chance to go home.”
