There may soon be a replacement for the former Furr’s Family Dining restaurant at 1606 S. Georgetown, which is near Harry and Georgetown.
“I like the concept of Furr’s,” says Hien Ly, who was a Furr’s general manager for a couple of years around 2001.
Ly has been in the restaurant business for 30 years at various places.
Currently, he owns the Plaza Grill in Hutchinson and Cherokee Lanes & Restaurant in Eureka.
He also used to have two China Village restaurants in Wichita in the 1980s in addition to restaurants in Hays and Great Bend.
For his new restaurant, Ly plans a concept similar to Furr’s.
“Right now I don’t know what I’m going to call it yet.”
He wants to offer what he calls healthy dishes, including breakfast items and Chinese and American food.
He plans to be open daily from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. “like Furr’s did before.”
Ly expects to close on the Georgetown property on Feb. 17 and then begin remodeling the approximately 10,000-square-foot space.
“Hopefully I can do it in a couple of months.”
A lot of diners were disappointed when Furr’s closed about this time last year. Ly was one of them and now hopes to reopen a similar enough concept that maybe he can keep the Furr’s sign and only change a letter or two for a new name.
“I liked that place a lot.”
