As of Thursday, another new bar is open where the Alibi Room once was at 919 E. Douglas.

The Office Bar & Lounge was briefly open then shut a couple of times the last few months of last year.

Now, Travis Hatfield has opened Peerless in the 3,000-square-foot space, which is between District Taqueria and Ribbit Computers.

Hatfield is in the car business with his father and also owns Uncle Sams in Haysville.

“It’s a small-town kind of old-school dive bar,” he says. “Really great people.”

He says he loves that bar but that “it was time for something a little bit bigger and better.”

Hatfield had been looking on and off for a couple of years when Andy Boyd, a co-owner in Central Standard Brewing and a commercial broker, “gave me the heads up when this place became available.”

Boyd founded CSB with Ian Crane, who is married to Hatfield’s sister, Sumer.

“I’m always going to try to keep a CSB beer on tap,” Hatfield says.

He says it’s not only because the owners are family.

“They put out a good product.”

He has other local beers on tap, such as Walnut River Brewing Co. and Wichita Brewing Co.

Hatfield says he named the bar after Peerless Mills, a business that was in the building in the early 1900s.

“I wanted a name that didn’t put the bar in a category.”

He says it’s not a sports bar or a speakeasy or a specialty cocktail bar with any theme.

“It’s just a bar.”

Hatfield says he wants anyone to feel comfortable coming to hang out.

Also, he says he knew he didn’t want to keep the most recent name at the bar.

“I think the Office is, like, the third most common name in the country.”
