Nies Homes specializes in high-end custom homes, but it’s now taking on a development role, too, with its purchase of the Frontgate community on East Central between Greenwich and 127th East.

“We saw an opportunity with Frontgate,” Nies vice president Curtis Cowgill says. “That’s a really nice community, and it made sense for us to purchase the rest of the lots in there and assume the role as the developer.”

He says that’s because Nies was building homes there when Hutton Development decided to sell the community of 38 patio homes.

“We wanted to maintain the integrity of the community by having control of what got built out there,” Cowgill says. “There’s also a shortage of lots in east Wichita, and so we wanted to secure an area for us to build in and for our customers to have a great place to live.”

The patio homes start around $340,000 and go to $475,000.

“It’s more of a boutique community,” Cowgill says. “It’s a little more exclusive.”

He says mowing, sprinklers and landscaping come with the homes.

“All that’s taken care of.”

Cowgill says Nies isn’t looking to own a lot more developments.

“That’s not really our main focus,” he says. “Really, it was just a great opportunity for us.”
