As restaurant openings go, the one-and-a-half-month delay for the new Bayleaf Indian Restaurant & Bar wasn’t so bad.
That’s the Lawrence restaurant that Nav Chawla, a cook at Wichita’s Passage to India, and Kuldip Singh, a co-owner in the restaurant near 21st and Woodlawn, opened Wednesday at 947 New Hampshire St.
Though so many restaurants are notorious for opening months later than planned, even the mere extra six weeks were an eternity for Chawla.
“It just took forever to come here,” he says.

For good reason, though. Chawla says Bayleaf was delayed in part because Passage to India has been doing particularly well.
“We’ve been so swamped here.”
Bayleaf will have about 30 percent more items on its menu than Passage to India, and Chawla says he hopes Wichitans will try it.
“We are, I guess, waiting for them.”
