Bill Corteville hasn’t had the best time trying to get the new Lucky Spot open, but the end is now in sight.
“I’ve not had luck at all,” he says of opening three businesses at the former Mike’s Steakhouse.
He says he’s having to start from scratch rather than merely renovate the large space.
“I’m getting wore out,” Corteville says. “It takes a toll on you being out here all the time.”

The Lucky Spot complex, which is at 2131 S. Broadway, will have a game shop and a restaurant in addition to a smoke shop.
Lucky Spot Smoke Shop is already open.
Lucky Spot Ye Stumble Inn, a game shop with magic tricks, video games, retro arcade games, board games, role-playing games and a place to play them, will open in the next month.
So will Lucky Spot Family Dining & Entertainment, which will serve pizza, burgers, hot dogs, bar food and breakfast items. It will have game tables and a stage for music.
“It was supposed to have been open three months ago,” Corteville says.
He previously was in the amusement business and had a route that he drove to fix pinball tables and video games.
After a lengthy hospital stay last year, Corteville says he lost the route. The smoke shop opportunity came up after someone else left the shop, and Corteville decided to open all the Lucky Spot businesses.
“I’m just trying to give something back.”
Corteville says there is a dearth of places to eat in that area of Wichita.
“I really wanted to do this for this side of town.”
Now that he’s weeks from opening, Corteville says his luck may be turning.
“Yeah, I’m hoping so.”
