More than a century after opening, Heads Shoe Store is closing.

“WICHITA’S OLDEST SHOE STORE IS SAYING SO LONG,” read a weekend e-mail blast from the business to customers.

The 105-year-old business has been in Lincoln Heights Village at Douglas and Oliver since 1949.

“What a great tenant,” says Joe Verbeckmoes, who handles leasing at Lincoln Heights. “We’re really sorry to see them go.”

He calls it “pretty amazing” that the business could last so long.

No one with Heads could be reached for comment. The store is closed Monday in preparation for a sale that starts Tuesday.

Verbeckmoes says he thinks Heads will close for good late this month.

“They did all they could to make it happen. It’s too bad.”
