When Melanie Williamson opened her Melanie Rene Jewelry at 4618 E. Central in 2009, she knew it wouldn’t be her store’s permanent home.
“It was always my intention to move east,” she says.
Now, she’s doing it. The store is moving to Cambridge Market at 21st and Webb Road in February.
“Our lease is up January 31,” Williamson says.
Ideally, she says, her new store would open Feb. 1, but she says, “I doubt that will happen.”
She’s not sure when it will be.
“I don’t have a clue. This is happening really quick for me.”
Affordability is what Williamson says attracted her to the former Emmert’s Jewelry & Repair space by Bella Luna Cafe when she returned to Wichita after she was “done with Vegas” living.
“It was a tough move for me,” says the Wichita native.
She says her current space offered her “a good start.”
Still, Williamson thinks Cambridge Market will offer “a lot more traffic,” and she says there are a lot of restaurants in the area that bring in a lot of people.
She says Cambridge Market’s Fred Hanley has been courting her store since she returned to town.
“He’s like, ‘Why didn’t you come to my mall?’”
Williamson’s store will grow from 1,200 square feet to 1,500 square feet.
“It’ll have a bigger … showroom.”
She says she’ll have some extra showcases for her custom jewelry.
The important question for some is whether Greg Breeden also will be moving his Watch Works business, which currently shares space with Williamson’s shop.
“Yep, he better be,” Williamson says.
She says she’s having “a big ol’ sale” in advance of her move, and everything is 20 to 50 percent off.
Look for news around early February of when the new store will open.
