Former Ryan Aviation owner Ron Ryan isn’t having much luck with retirement.
“I’m trying to remain retired, but it’s kind of hard sometimes to do,” he says.
Ryan owns five Meineke Car Care Centers in Wichita, three in Tulsa and a new one in Hutchinson.
“I’m not doing it for me.”
He says he has the businesses for his son, Scott, brother-in-law, Steve Blasdel, and Blasdel’s son, Ryan.
Ryan bought the businesses seven years ago but does not own the land they’re on.
“I want to own the properties,” he says. “I’d rather own than lease.”
So, one by one, he’s going to move his stores to properties he’s buying.
“That’s the plan.”
Most of his leases here still have a couple of years left on them, so it won’t necessarily be a quick process.
Ryan’s first new Meineke will be a new store – not the move of an existing one – that will open at the southwest corner of Central and Washington. Previously, Ryan didn’t have a downtown Meineke.
Broker Morrie Sheets of Chaseland Inc. handled the deal.
Ryan says he plans to use the existing 6,000-square-foot building, which once was home to Shively Tire.
“It’s bigger than we need, but it’s a good location.”
He also purchased a building to the west of the corner and plans to demolish it so there will be plenty of parking.
Ryan says his Meineke business has been mostly good.
“It was slow getting started,” he says.
Over time, however, he says customers have come to know that “we’re never going to fix something that doesn’t need fixed.”
Though his retirement isn’t quite as relaxing as perhaps it should be, Ryan says he’s pleased with the Meineke business.
“Wichita’s a great place to be.”
