A new gas station will be opening where another gas station used to be at the northwest corner of Central and 127th Street.

“It used to be a good station, and I think it can still be a good station,” says Michael Kohout of Colorado-based Western Petroleum.

The company owns 10 stations, including two in Winfield – the Shamrock, which is a Valero brand, and a Conoco that is becoming a Valero.

The new Wichita store will be a Valero as well.

Though the company has to reinstall an entire fueling facility, Kohout says it helps that a building already is there.

“That helped reduce our cost.”

Kohout scouts new locations for the company and says there could be more opportunities in Wichita.

“We see a lot of potential over there,” he says of the east side.

He says new apartments in that area make that corner particularly attractive.

Kohout lives in Overland Park and says he sees a lot of Overland Park in east Wichita developments.

Though he’s potentially interested in more development, Kohout says, “We grow very slowly.”

The new store should open by about Nov. 15.

Kohout says he likes Wichita a lot and may even consider moving here.

“It would make my life a lot easier and my gas bill a lot cheaper.”
