Eby Construction to move to new headquarters; auction to precede the move

Moving generally inspires a paring down of belongings, and that’s just what Martin K. Eby Construction is doing in preparation for a multiphased move to new headquarters near 37th and Hillside.

At 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 30, McCurdy Auction is auctioning more than 500 items from Eby’s construction yard and offices at 1130 S. McComas St.

“There are a lot of tools and equipment from jobs as far back … as some of the missile silos that were built in the 1960s,” says Mike Grier, Eby president and CEO. “There’s a myriad of surplus equipment, some of it very unique.”

Eby moved to the Harry and West streets area in the early 1950s, Grier says, “back when it was peach orchards.”

He says there’s “just a lot of history in this auction.”

Auctioneer Megan McCurdy Niedens says that “there is a ton of stuff.”

For instance, there’s some special scaffolding the firm had to help build the Hyatt Regency Wichita.

“Over the years, they just have kind of accumulated and accumulated,” Niedens says.

Eby’s new headquarters will be at 2525 E 36th Circle North.

It will be on 9 acres that have two 20,000-square-foot buildings, one of which will be for the firm’s shop and one of which will be for new offices.

The first building will be ready in late October. The latter will be ready in June after some renovations and additions.

That’s when Eby will move from its current headquarters at 610 N. Main St.

In the ’70s, that building became Eby’s corporate headquarters. It sold the building to Envision in 2004 and kept offices on the fifth floor.

“We have been tenants,” Grier says.

He’s been wanting the firm to be all in one place.

“That’s been in the back of my mind for several years,” Grier says.

With the field office and corporate headquarters in the same place, he says there will be “the ability to speed up our response time (and) our collaboration.”

Grier says a buyer approached the firm about its 12 acres on West Street, where it also has about 60,000 square feet of shop, warehouse and office space.

“It gives us the chance to right-size our facilities and make the improvements that it takes to keep up with the change in the business climate.”

Grier says the new headquarters will take the the almost 80-year-old company “a long ways into the future.”

The firm, which fluctuates between 175 and 200 employees, is “good,” Grier says.

“We’re blessed with a lot of projects, and we’re fairly busy right now.”
