What’s an ‘upscale dive bar?’ Let Janelle King and Paige Jordan explain.
Can you picture a velvet tiger, kind of like the sort of tiger that might be on some funky ’70s velvet artwork?
If you can, then you can envision the vibe that Janelle King and Paige Jordan are going for at their Velvet Tiger “upscale dive bar,” as King put it, which they plan to open this summer.
King said it’ll be “a little dark, a little swanky” and nothing like her Bubbles bar within her Workroom downtown.
Bubbles is the champagne bar Jordan manages for King.
The two, who are a couple, will be joint partners in the Velvet Tiger and also in the property where they’re opening on South Hydraulic between Kellogg and Douglas.
“It’s been an idea forever,” Jordan said.
They’ve been collecting items to go in it for a long time, too, but it’s the property that prompted them to do it now.
King said it’s about working toward creating more passive revenue streams by renting to others.
There are two buildings with six units between 415 and 429 S. Hydraulic, which happens to be just south of the new Goldfinch bar.
The Velvet Tiger will take one of those spots, and there will be other units of 800 to 2,200 square feet to rent.
King, whose background is in design, said she’s “probably most excited about getting my fingers in a location that needs a lot of work.”
She said she wants to transform the space into an attractive and marketable destination that draws visitors for all the tenants.
“Our intention is to update and upgrade the entire facility.”
At the bar, there will be an aesthetic to match an actual print of a velvet tiger that will be on display.
Think circle booths and lots of rich velvet. That’s the upscale part.
The dive part includes a pool table, a vintage bumper table and a 2 a.m. closing time.
Look for more information plus a sneak-peek video sometime around July, which is when King and Jordan hope to open.
King said it won’t look or feel anything like a sports bar, which is a popular theme to a lot of bars around Wichita.
“It could really fill a little hole that we’re not seeing in Wichita right now.”
