Yes, Wichita, after more than two decades, those persistent rumors about Ruth’s Chris Steak House coming to Wichita finally are true.

According to a $5 million building permit filed with the city, the Florida company is going to remodel the former Spaghetti Factory space at the Waterfront, at 13th and Webb Road.

That’s also the one-time Fox & Hound space.

The upscale chain will upgrade the facade of the building and have minor landscaping and sidewalk upgrades in addition to remodeling the interior.

No one with the Waterfront is commenting.

Rumors have waxed and waned about Ruth’s Chris for years. In the early 2000s, talk persisted that the steakhouse would open at Bradley Fair, but it never happened.

Look for more information as soon as the company or Waterfront officials are ready to comment.

Ruth’s Chris has a long history.

“In 1965, a time when most women couldn’t even apply for a bank card without their husband’s signature, our founder Ruth Fertel risked it all and mortgaged her home to buy a small steak house in New Orleans,” the chain’s website says.

“When a kitchen fire destroyed Chris Steak House in 1976, Ruth was forced to relocate her business, but the Chris Steak House name wasn’t allowed to come along. Short on time, Ruth improvised, adding her own name to the sign. That made it “Ruth’s Chris Steak House” and our legendary name was born.”

The chain’s first franchise opened in 1976.

Today, the chain is in 21 countries.
