Turning 90 is a big deal, and so is the growth of this Wichita business
Turning 90 is a pretty big deal for anyone, or any organization, but Mid American Credit Union has a lot more to celebrate than simply its age this year.
First, the credit union has purchased land at the northwest corner of East 21st Street and 143rd Street North for its sixth Wichita branch and 10th overall.
“It will be a traditional branch,” said Carrie Herman, director of marketing.
Instead of a traditional drive-through, there will be an ITM, or interactive teller machine, so members still can converse with a human.
Construction likely will start this summer, and the new branch will be ready next spring.
There were several possibilities of where Mid American could have built at that intersection, but Herman said the northwest corner seemed best for members to get in and out of easily.
She said the credit union keeps track of where its membership is growing, which is why it chose that site, noting that it’s also close to Andover.
The credit union has identified a couple more sites where it also could expand in the next year or so.
In addition to the new branch, Herman said Mid American also completely renovated its Arkansas City branch and celebrated a grand reopening late last week.
“That was an exciting opportunity for us to change that building.”
Now, Mid American is remodeling its branch at 31st South and Meridian. Its lobby is closed, but there’s a drive-through that will remain open for members to use until the rest of the building reopens in the fourth quarter.
Finally, Mid American has selected a successor to current president and CEO Brad Herzet, who is retiring next February.
Kayla Stading, who now is vice president of information systems and member experience, will replace him.
The Fort Hays State University graduate with a master’s degree in organizational leadership joined the credit union in 2012.
She left in late 2022 to become director of operations for the multibillion-dollar Abound Credit Union in Kentucky before returning to Mid American in 2024.
Stading will work with Herzet, among others, as she prepares for her new role.
Mid American has grown from assets of $281 million in late 2017 to assets of $511 million at the end of last year.
In a news release, Stading said the credit union is all about improving people’s lives, and she’s “excited for the opportunity to continue providing that opportunity to members through innovation, exceptional service experiences, and with a culture that empowers employees to succeed.”
She said Mid American “has a rich history, and I am thankful for the privilege to lead us into the next chapter.”
