And Pelican makes No. 78.

Genesis Health Clubs, which already bills itself as the largest privately owned health club chain nationally, has acquired its 78th club.

Pelican Athletic Club is based in Mandeville, La., which is on the other side of Lake Pontchartrain from New Orleans.

The 175,000-square-foot club has a variety of amenities, including 14 tennis courts, a variety of cardio offerings, strength equipment, youth programs, spa services and cafe and other social spaces.

It also has a number of aquatics offerings, such as lap pools, a wading pool and a splash pad.

“Pelican Athletic Club is a remarkable athletic complex with a strong reputation and a dedicated membership base,” said an e-mailed statement from Genesis president and owner Rodney Steven II.

“The amenities, quality, and community it has established align perfectly with the Genesis brand. We’re here to build on that success, invest in the member experience, and continue elevating the standard for health and fitness in the South.”

Steven said he plans expanded offerings at the club.

“This is all about creating more opportunities for Pelican members.”

Genesis also has other Louisiana clubs, in Baton Rouge and Slidell.

The chain, which has been growing steadily for years if not rapidly sometimes, is in 13 states.
