Family opens second Wichita specialty gym, this time on the west side

In addition to Johnny Steven’s new Teriyaki Madness coming to the Shops at Avante, Wichita’s second D1 Training has opened there.

Brothers Paul and Brian Suellentrop, who developed the center at 37th North and Ridge Road, and their siblings, Jennifer Lines and David Suellentrop, recently opened D1 Training West Wichita. That follows the November opening of D1 Training East Wichita at Paul and Brian Suellentrops’ Hawthorne Court at 12938 E. 21st St., just east of 127th Street.

Paul Suellentrop said clients “love the ability to go to both locations.”

In some cases, he said, they may work on one side of Wichita but live on the other, so having two sites to choose from is convenient. In other cases, they might live on one side but have to take their children to play sports on the other side of the city, so it gives them an outlet while their kids are playing.

“We hear that from a lot from folks,” he said. “It gives them a lot of flexibility.”

D1 is for kids 7 and older, teens and adults who are looking to improve in sports through an athletic-based fitness facility.

It’s all about honing qualities such as speed, agility and endurance, and there’s technology to track progress.

D1 isn’t the kind of gym where members pop in and work out on their own. Everything is in classes, which are separate for children and adults.

For the kids, it’s also about learning teamwork while building self esteem, too.

Pricing for classes is done on a case-by-case basis according to need.

The new D1 is open now, and once Teriyaki Madness opens late this summer, there will be only one 1,400-square-foot space left in the 28,000-square-foot center.

For now, the two D1 Training centers are all the Suellentrops have planned.

“We’re pulling these up out of the ground,” Paul Suellentrop said. “We’re focused on these two and really getting ensconced in the community here in Wichita.”
