When Heather and Anthony MacMahon first got into the liquidation business, it wasn’t exactly a business.

In May 2022, the two got a couple of truckloads of overstocked merchandise and had a couple of garage sales. Big ones.

They made money and had product left, so they decided to open a storefront. A few weeks later, they opened their first SOT Boutique in Hutchinson.

Now, the MacMahons have three concepts: SOT Boutique, which sells women’s clothing and accessories; Bin Shop’n, which sells a little bit of everything; and the new Every Room, which sells furniture.

Their Every Room concept is now open at Towne East Square in 22,000 square feet where the Sears auto center used to be, and their SOT Boutique is moving from its current 1,500 square feet to the former Forever 21 space, which is 13,000 square feet.

“We just have so many great things to offer our customers,” Heather MacMahon said.

SOT stands for Saving on Threads. Every item is $4.99 — no more, no less.

MacMahon said customers “don’t have to look at a price tag at all.”

The new store, which likely will open April 18, will be just outside of the Dillard’s entrance to the mall.

In addition to women’s fashion, there will be shoes, handbags and swimsuits.

“We are thinking of adding kids, but that is not a definite thing yet,” MacMahon said.

The store used to carry children’s items, and she said customers say they miss that.

The MacMahons can’t name the chains where they get their merchandise, but they said they’re some of the biggest retailers there are.

“We are just a fancy liquidation boutique, I guess,” Heather MacMahon said.

Anthony MacMahon said the stores are “bougie on a budget.”

“We basically have the pick of what we want our stores to have,” he said. “And then the stuff we don’t want, we liquidate to other liquidators.”

The kind of clothing SOT sells normally retails elsewhere for between $24 and $80.

Anthony MacMahon said his wife has a high quality standard.

“She actually does not let certain things even come to our store.”

The MacMahons are working to open a higher-end online store this spring called SOT Limited, which will have clothing that normally retails for more than $80.

It will have designer brands such as Donna Karan, Trina Turk and Ugg.

The MacMahons, who are based in Hutchinson, are now in four states with SOT.

The Every Room store at Towne East is their first, with furniture prices 55% off of retail prices. There’s also home decor.

The MacMahons may expand the concept depending on how this first store goes.

If it follows what happened with SOT, the growth could be quick.

With the boutique, Heather MacMahon said, “All of sudden we had one store and then we had two and then we had 15.”

She’s a registered nurse and had been working at Healing Waters, where she took a leave of absence but then never went back.

Anthony MacMahon said “the liquidation is very fluid” in terms of what products are available when.

He said the question in his business is, “How do you . . . get people that same value proposition as far as price but have more than one item so they don’t have to wait in line?”

MacMahon said that’s why for the Every Room concept, he and his wife have a deal with one company only to get its merchandise, including a number of the same items, which they then sell at a discount.

“So Every Room is discounted products all the time, but shop at your leisure.”
