Five years after opening at NewMarket Square, this store has moved farther north

In addition to being closer to customers’ homes, Jesse Sauer said his new store at 37th North and Ridge Road also fits the store’s layout better.

A lot has changed with Wichita development in the last couple of decades, said Horton’s Carpets owner Jesse Sauer, and that’s why he’s already moved his newest store from NewMarket Square to the Avante development at 37th North and Ridge Road.

“We wanted to move it a little more north, more where the neighborhoods were,” Sauer said. “We’re just kind of going to where the customers are.”

It used to be east and west stores were enough, he said.

Sauer has had Horton’s stores near 13th and Greenwich and Maple and Ridge Road for more than two decades each.

“Wichita’s just changed so much in 20 years,” he said.

So in 2019, he opened a store at NewMarket North, just north of NewMarket Square on Maize Road.

Even since, Sauer said, northwest Wichita is much more developed.

Also, he said, “We just redesigned the showroom, and this fits our layout a little bit better.”

The store is more like 2,000 square feet now instead of about 2,800 square feet.

Sauer doesn’t plan changes to his other two stores.

“They’re doing great.”

As Wichita continues to change, though, Sauer said there could be a chance for a fourth store.

“Not yet. It’s possible, though.”
