A new kind of consignment store is opening in Wichita this week
There’s a new kind of consignment store opening at the Parklane Shopping Center at Lincoln and Oliver this week.
Robin Covington said her Fashion Freak will be an “all-alternative clothing consignment store.”
That means she’ll carry goth and hippie items along with costumes, lingerie and festival clothing.
Covington likes to describe her concept as Spencer’s meets Hot Topic meets Third Planet with some lingerie and costumes thrown in.
“Most of the time, all of those styles, they overlap. People who shop for those go to the same stores.”
She said she wants to offer everything in one place.
“There’s not really a store that combines all of those things together.”
Covington said the bonus is that her store isn’t a corporate one.
“I’m really, really happy to say I can price my things pretty affordably.”
People who consign clothing will receive 60% of the sales.
Fashion Freak opens on Saturday.
Regular hours will be noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.
Covington has had a number of careers. She’s been a cook and a teacher, but she said it’s her current job as an exotic dancer that has helped her be able to start her store.
“Dancing has actually helped me the most, surprisingly,” Covington said. “Exotic dancing has gotten me here. I’m very thankful for it.”
Though she’ll continue to dance on the side some — the club “is definitely more of a means to an end” — she said Fashion Freak will be her main focus.
“It’s my baby, you know? When you start a business, in a lot of ways, it’s like having a kid. You gotta be there 24-7.”
