Longtime Wichita entertainment venue to close next month
UPDATED — Almost a quarter century after opening, the Loony Bin comedy club is closing.
“I lost my partner of 35 years unexpectedly last June,” said owner Larry Marks. “That obviously turned my world upside down for a little bit.”
Marks is 76 and ready to retire.
“I want to fish and play golf, you know?”
The Loony Bin will remain open through July 15.
Marks also sold his Loony Bin clubs in Tulsa and Little Rock. One in Oklahoma City closed last year when its lease was up.
He said he’s amenable to someone taking over the Loony Bin name, logo, client list and legacy in Wichita.
“Business up there was always real good,” Marks said. “It’s a great opportunity for someone to come in and take it over.”
However, the building has sold, so it can’t remain in its current space at 215 N. St. Francis.
The Loony Bin had been at 21st and Woodlawn in Oxford Square from 1999 until 2013.
In 2014, it reopened at its new downtown space.
For a time, it became known as Live at 215 with the intent to have other shows and events at the space.
“It didn’t really work,” said Ron Shively, who has worked in various capacities at the business on and off for more than two decades.
He said gift cards are valid through July 15 and then likely should be good at the other Loony Bins out of state.
In part of an emoji-filled Facebook goodbye, the club said:
“Thank you, Wichita, for letting us be a part of your story. We cherish the laughter-filled moments we’ve shared with each, and every one of you. . . . As we bid farewell, we encourage you to continue seeking laughter wherever you go.”
