‘It’s a whole family affair,’ and an early one at that, at this new Goddard franchise

Most people who already have full-time jobs wouldn’t be looking for another that gets them up at 1:30 in the morning, but that’s what Jamey and Liz Blubaugh have chosen for themselves.

The two already are real estate brokers with Nikkel & Associates, and they had some extra room in their building at 222 N. Main St. in Goddard, so they decided to open Mr Bs Daylight Donuts there.

“I kind of come from a third-shift background,” said Jamey Blubaugh, former Goddard mayor.

So each night after dinner, he and his wife get to bed around 8 or 9 p.m. to then get up early and get the first batch of doughnuts ready.

“We’re the bakers at nighttime,” Blubaugh said.

Their son, Bentley, and his wife, Sadie, run the shop daily, and Liz Blubaugh works the counter, too. Their daughter, Talia, is a nurse but is helping out some as well.

The Blubaughs’ other children, Jake, 14, and Connley, 12, work at Mr Bs on the weekends.

Jamey Blubaugh said he especially loves that his 82-year-old father-in-law, Joe Ramirez, helps at the business every morning.

“It’s a whole family affair.”

Mr. Bs is open 5 to 11 a.m. daily except for Sundays. Even though Sunday is a good day for doughnuts, Blubaugh said his family needs a break at least one day a week.

Daylight Donuts is a Tulsa-based franchise that’s known for its original glaze doughnuts along with a variety of cake doughnuts.

“It’s been a big need for Goddard, I think,” Blubaugh said.

There also are bear claws, including a margarita-flavored one and a strawberry cheesecake bear claw.

“We try and put out a really good variety,” Blubaugh said.

There also are biscuits and gravy, sausage rolls and apple fritters.

“My favorite’s a chocolate nut roll,” Blubaugh said.

There also is coffee along with other drinks, and there is seating for 25.

The business is open now, and there will be a grand opening celebration on March 28.

There is room for three more businesses at the Blubaughs’ building, but Jamey Blubaugh said that will be for more offices — not another business for his family.

He said he’s not concerned by the news that Starbucks is going to be opening in Goddard. Though Mr Bs serves coffee, the focus is on doughnuts.

“I really think there’s not much competition out there, especially fresh made, in the Goddard area.”
