One of NewMarket Square’s original anchor tenants is going to close
The longtime Bed Bath & Beyond store at NewMarket Square at 21st and Maize Road is closing, apparently because it is one of the New Jersey chain’s “lower-producing Bed Bath & Beyond stores.”
No one with the company’s media relations team could immediately be reached for comment, but a store employee confirmed the news.
A date for the last day of business has not been announced yet.
The store employee said the east-side Bed Bath & Beyond at Greenwich Place at K-96 and Greenwich would remain open.
Though the chain is known for its 20% off coupons, those aren’t valid at the NewMarket store currently. Much of the store is 10% off, however.
The chain announced 87 store closures nationally in January, including ones in Lawrence and Manhattan, but this week it announced another 150 closures.
According to a regulatory filing this week, the company said: “Plans for current store fleet optimization program to be expanded to more than 400, including closure of an approximately 150 additional lower-producing Bed Bath & Beyond stores, which builds on closure of approximately 200 Bed Bath & Beyond stores and approximately 50 standalone Harmon stores in the U.S.”
Along with Walmart, Old Navy and Borders Books, Bed Bath & Beyond was one of the original NewMarket anchor tenants when the development opened its first phase in 2001.
Look for more information on the closure as soon as it’s available.
