Take a tour of Wichita’s new Topgolf, which is now open near K-96 and Greenwich

The much-anticipated Topgolf entertainment complex is having a soft opening this week near K-96 and Greenwich.

“We’re excited to be here and be part of the community finally,” said Steven Schulte, director of operations for the Dallas-based chain.

Topgolf wasn’t expected to open until the spring, but Schulte said the 52-bay complex at 2796 N. Greenwich Road came together faster than planned.

The climate-controlled bays allow visitors to hit golf balls onto a field that is surrounded by 156-foot nets. Something called Toptracer technology allows golfers to track their shots via screens. There are a variety of games they can play, such as Angry Birds, which is a golfing version of the digital game.

The bays can accommodate eight people, but only six can play at a time.

The price of a bay — which is per bay, not per person — ranges from $28 to about $50 depending on the day and time.

Reservations require a two-hour booking. There’s a call-ahead wait list that doesn’t require a set booking time. Customers also can simply walk in.

In addition, there’s a 9-hole miniature golf course and a bar area with a video wall with an 11-by-20-foot screen, which Schulte thinks may be the largest in the city.

There are what Schulte calls luxury bays available to rent for parties, and there’s an event space without bays that overlooks the field.

Some bays have glass walls to block wind.

“They’re really nice this time of year,” Schulte said.

There are a lot of garage doors for an outdoor feel, along with a lot of heaters.

In the summer, there will be a golf academy for children. There’s also an on-staff instructor for groups and individuals.

Along with a new Topgolf opening near Salt Lake City on the same day as the Wichita one, there are now 84 Topgolf sites globally.

Topgolf, which is hiring up to 300 workers, is still hiring for the facility. Interested applicants can check the careers page of Topgolf.com.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday.

Schulte, who happens to be a west-sider, said it’s too early to say if Topgolf will ever add a west-side site.

The east-side Topgolf is a prototype for the chain. It’s not the smallest or the largest model.

“We have several different models and sizes,” Schulte said.

He said there are a lot of local touches that incorporate a Wichita theme.

“A lot of things in here are very unique visually.”
