Gym to move from the Dungeon to an airier space
Renaire Palmer is moving his Fundamental Fitness, which means he needs to come up with a new nickname for his gym.
It’s currently in a basement at 257 S. Hillside that he refers to as the Dungeon.
His new gym will be in the former Fit Body Boot Camp space in the one-time Big Dog Motorcycles building at 1520 E. Douglas. Palmer said he’ll have to be in the space for a while before a new nickname presents itself.
Palmer is a lifelong athlete — he played football and basketball and did some track at East High School — who has a passion for fitness and helping others achieve it. He started Fundamental Fitness in 2010 after seeing children of his friends struggle with injuries in weight rooms or by specializing too early in sports and getting repetitive injuries.
As Palmer helped the kids, their parents who accompanied them to the gym wanted to work out, too, so he expanded what he offers.
“It kind of developed from there into having adult classes as well.”
Palmer now has a couple of other trainers working with him and needs more space.
He’s going from about 1,000 square feet to about 3,500 square feet. Fundamental Fitness doesn’t need much more room than that because there aren’t a lot of machines or equipment. Palmer offers a lot of body weight and movement exercises.
Some of what he learned about fitness came when he was in college at Kansas State University. Palmer played on a practice team for the women’s basketball program. He said it enabled him to see fitness training at a Division 1 level.
Jake Ramstack and Carl Hebert of InSite Real Estate Group handled the deal for the new space.
Fit Body Boot Camp now is at 4817 E. Douglas by Il Vicino.
Palmer’s new space should be ready no later than the second week of February, he said.
“It’s really just about helping people at the end of the day for me.”
