Laid-off KFDI workers Carol Hughes and Wil Day land new jobs at the same time

Last month, Have You Heard? reported how Carol Hughes, the longtime face of KFDI, 101.3-FM, and assignment editor Wil Day were laid off from the station.

Neither commented at the time, but they’re both now happy to confirm they have new jobs, which coincidentally started on the same day this week.

Hughes is now development coordinator for the Kansas Food Bank.

“I just wanted to find a job that mattered in the community that could help people . . . and that’s exactly what I found. It’s kind of crazy.”

She’d been at KFDI for more than 20 years and always was a presence at country music shows in the area.

Hughes has journalism and communications degrees from Wichita State University, though she never planned on being on-air talent.

“I wanted to write commercials and plan events,” she said.

Phil Thompson brought her on air at T-95, and Hughes said her job “just slowly turned into something else.”

Ten days after she bought a new house this spring, Hughes was let go.

“I bought it because I knew I wanted to stay here,” she said.

“I really care about the community.”

Hughes will be working with donors and doing community outreach.

She said the food bank helps 85 counties across Kansas.

“It’s huge what they do.”

Day is now assignment desk editor for KAKE, Channel 10, where he previously worked in between stints at KFDI.

“I love it,” he said.

Hughes gave Day a shout-out on Facebook this week.

“So we got let go the same day and started new jobs the same day. Congrats William Day!!”
