Target to remodel more than 1,000 stores in 2020, including one in Wichita

Target is “reimagining” more than 1,000 of its 1,800 stores by the end of 2020.

“And we’ll keep remodeling stores beyond that time frame,” said spokeswoman Liz Hancock.

In Wichita, the northeast Target — at Regency Lakes, at 21st and Greenwich — is on the list for 2020.

Hancock said the idea behind the chain’s current redesign is to bring more modern elements, technology and digital experiences. Hancock said it’s all about making shopping easier.

“It’s actually our most ambitious store redesign to date,” she said.

The Minneapolis company has provided an online Q&A to answer questions about the remodeling.

“No two remodels look exactly alike, and for a good reason,” the Q&A said.

“We approach each one with a customized combo of the latest enhancements from our next generation of store design, to meet the unique needs of the store and the neighborhood around it.”

For stores with two entrances like the one at Regency Lakes, each entrance will be upgraded for different functions.

That means one entry will be all about ease of use — with possible drive-up parking spots, designated areas for picking up online orders or essentials such as grab-and-go food. That’s also where self-checkout lanes will be. The idea is to make things quick and easy for customers.

The other entrance area will focus on “inspiration,” though it’s not clear what that means.

Throughout the store, there will be brighter lighting through a variety of lights that will “create a warm and inviting experience that’s hip and cool.”

There also will be more modern displays with different “shops” around the store. The beauty area will have more of a boutique feel.

Look for new pops of red, Target’s signature color, in the store as well.

The store will remain open through remodeling.

Hancock said she can’t say when construction will start, only that it will be in 2020. She said she also can’t share many details on what it actually will look like yet.

“Once construction is under way, I can provide more detail.”
