Word recently circulated that a restaurant was going to take the glass-walled front space at Happiness Plaza, but that’s not the case, at least not for now.

“News sure does travel fast, even if it’s wrong,” says center owner Brad White.

He says someone did look at putting a restaurant in the space, which is a prominent 5,000 square feet at 3555 E. Douglas kitty-corner from Clifton Square.

“What we thought was going to turn into something just absolutely fizzled,” White says.

Then he says he heard talk that “we were tearing it down, and then we were doing something else.”

None of it is true except White is looking for a tenant.

He moved his Dean’s Designs from the spot to a smaller space within the center in 2017.

For a variety of reasons, White has a few other vacancies at the center, but he says he hasn’t asked anyone to leave.

He says he moved his store because “our m.o. has basically changed.”

“We have, in essence, scaled down from the furniture and the decorative accessories that we used to sell quite a bit of.”

With more people focused on shopping online, White has returned his focus to fresh flowers.

His parents, Dean and Joyce, started the business as a floral shop and then gradually grew into selling other things.

White says he doesn’t know what will wind up in his former space.

“You never can tell,” he says. “Not until they’re there.”
