The owner of the Dairy Queen in Hays is preparing to open one in Maize, too, and has plans for more in the Wichita area down the road.
“We’ve got to make sure the one in Maize works first,” Jeff Pinney says.
He and his wife, Jana, are opening a DQ Grill & Chill at the northeast corner of 37th and Maize Road in front of Wichita State University West and across from Menards.
“We asked for Goddard first,” Pinney says of opening DQs in this area. “This one was easiest to get into.”

Pinney says there have been several things delaying the store, though nothing big that can’t be remedied.
“We’d hoped to been open in Maize about three months ago.”
Instead, he now hopes to be open by late summer.
The DQ will seat 72 and have a typical menu of ice cream treats, sandwiches and snacks.
Jeff Pinney used to be a district manager for Dairy Queen in Kansas years ago but has owned the restaurant in Hays for 21 years.
The Pinneys likely will have a few more of the restaurants here, but Jeff Pinney won’t share details.
“There’s plans in the works.”
He does say, though, that includes plans in Goddard but not anytime soon.
Look for more details as they become available.
