UPDATED — After 30 years in residential construction, Gene Vitarelli has built a lot of homes around Wichita, particularly the southeast part of the city.

He says he sees a new need and is about to start one more development on Pawnee just east of Webb Road. The 75 acres will allow for 190 lots, and Vitarelli and a handful of other contractors plan houses in the $180,000-to-$205,000 range.

“It’s lacking in that area,” he says of houses at those prices.

Vitarelli is platting the development now. It will be called Cedar Creek.

“We’ll have three ponds in there,” he says.

There will be a bike path, too.

“That’s what the city would like to see.”

The property currently is in the county. It has to be annexed into Wichita for city services.

Ben Gartner and Bree Maybee of J.P. Weigand & Sons handled the deal for the land.

Vitarelli says he plans to start construction next year. Streets will be in by late spring or early summer, and then construction will start on the houses.

“We’re going full speed ahead.”
