Usually when you think about a subscription, it’s to a newspaper or magazine. However, nationally in the last few years, subscription boxes of merchandise have become popular, and now Lucinda’s in Old Town is going to offer the service.

“It is something that we have kind of dreamed about for a couple years,” owner Valerie Reimers says.

“For whatever reason, I have found it a daunting task to do,” she says. “I guess it’s because I want it to be really well curated.”

Customers can sign up for a mystery box of merchandise, which often has a theme. Subscriptions usually are monthly or quarterly.

“I have only done it a time or two myself,” Reimers says.

She says she thought it would be fun timing to do some themed boxes in conjunction with Wichita’s birthday this week.

“So we’re just jumping in.”

Lucinda’s customers can sign up now through Aug. 18, and pay $199 for three boxes that will arrive in September, October and November. Customers can pick up the boxes for free in the store or pay $30 for three shipments.

Reimers is calling the subscription a “box of happy.”

“I love to piece together little things to give to somebody,” she says. “Plus, I love the mystery of it all.”

She says it’s a way to try products you might not otherwise, and it’s an easy way to give gifts.

“You don’t have to think about what you’re going to give,” Reimers says.

“I know they’re probably not for everybody, but I think they’re a lot of fun.”
