Wichita Flea Market debuts at Century II this weekend
The new Wichita Flea Market opens this weekend at the Expo Hall at Century II.
As Have You Heard? reported in May, organizer Jimmy Spillman has a career in finance but is doing the market as “just a fun little secondary job.”
So after all his work getting ready for this weekend, how does Spillman feel now?
“I’m going crazy, I think.”
He says everything is going well, though.
“We’re excited to get going.”
The market fills a void left by the flea market that used to be held once a month at the Kansas Coliseum in Park City.
Spillman’s market will be what he calls “monthly(ish)” in a news release.
This weekend’s market is Saturday and Sunday. Markets also are planned for Sept. 22 and 23, Oct. 27 and 28 and Dec. 15 and 16. More will follow next year.
Admission is $3 for a one-day ticket and $5 for a two-day ticket. Kids ages 12 and under are free.
There’s room for 357 vendors. So far, 102 have signed up.
“It changes all the time,” Spillman says. “We had no idea what to expect.”
However, he does expect more vendors to come at the last minute.
“You can just show up,” he says. “That’s what a lot of them do. That’s the beauty of a flea market.”
