An artist has vacated her studio behind Gallery XII downtown, but that doesn't mean there's going to be any less art near Douglas and Topeka.

"We have taken it, so we are more than doubling our gallery space," says Jan Jensen, one of the artists in the Gallery XII cooperative.

The existing gallery space will continue to be for artists in the cooperative, and the new space will be for other artists to rent.

"It's a call to artists to consider renting space there and to let the public know we're expanding," Jensen says.

She says Gallery XII is the oldest artist cooperative in Wichita. This is the first time in its four-decade history that artists will be able to rent space there.

"There are people who do just want gallery space," Jensen says.

Prices will vary. Space is available starting Aug. 1.

Anyone interested can e-mail galleryxii@yahoo.com.

Jensen says the expansion is an opportunity to bring in other art forms.

"We're trying to expand our media offering."

The space is being painted in preparation now.

Then, Jensen says, "We're ready to move in."
