It was April of 2014 when Have You Heard? first reported that Wichita’s first Qdoba Mexican Grill will open in the former Yen Ching Chinese Restaurant & Club space at Central and Rock Road.
Now, it’s finally happening.
“It’s definitely later than we were thinking,” says restaurateur Eric Estes.
He says the good news, though, is that “we were able to successfully repurpose the building.”

For a while, Estes was concerned he’d have to take down the Yen Ching building and start from scratch.
“It was a very large project, let me put it that way,” he says.
The restaurant is having a VIP dinner on May 6, which will serve as a practice run.
“Generally, we’ll open within the next day or two,” Estes says.
At the latest, the restaurant will open by May 9.
Then, Estes says the hunt can begin for Wichita’s next Qdoba.
“Obviously, it would probably be on the west side,” he says.
Estes thinks Wichita can support two or three Qdobas.
Leisa Lowry of J.P. Weigand & Sons will help him find the space, he says.
Estes says since he really hasn’t had a chance to start looking, the next Qdoba probably won’t open this year.
“It’ll probably end up being next year.”
