When Sara Ornelas opened her Blue Baboon Books store at NewMarket Square in July, she said it was a pop-up store that could become permanent.
She’s decided against that, though, and the store’s last day in business is Friday.
“It didn’t make financial sense to keep this one open, but we’re not ruling out opening up another brick-and-mortar sometime next year,” she says.
Ornelas is continuing her mobile Blue Baboon Books and will continue to do story times at coffee shops, such as one that’s planned for Jan. 10 at Twisted Java.
“So we’ll be able to stay connected to our little customers.”
In addition to her mobile store, which operates out of a trailer, Ornelas says she now has enough staff and inventory to do inside sales at school book fairs as well.
If she does open another storefront in 2018, Ornelas says she’ll do so with the lessons she’s learned at her first store.
“There’s probably a couple of things we’d do differently if we open another brick-and-mortar.”
After closing her shop, Ornelas says she’s going to concentrate on the mobile unit.
“The mobile business is doing well, so we’re going to stick with that strength for now.”
