Wichita’s second Petland store is going to open next month on the west side.
Franchisee Rebecca Hertel is opening the store. A different franchisee has the Petland at One Kellogg Place.
The new Petland will be in 4,200 square feet at the Fox Ridge Plaza at 3520 N. Maize Road.
“I wanted to be in a growing marketplace,” Hertel says. “I wanted to work with a landlord that wanted to work with me. … Not everybody’s comfortable with a pet store.”

Marv Schellenberg and his son, Jesse, handled the deal.
“To find Marv and … Jesse was a blessing,” Hertel says. “It was just an instant click thing.”
Petland sells puppies, small animals, birds and fish and everything the animals need. Hertel says that includes environmental, nutritional, maintenance and behavioral needs.
Hertel will manage the store. She says her husband, Troy, is her inspiration for opening the business.
“He knew my passion for animals and my knowledge,” Hertel says. “He’s the one going, ‘You got this.’ ”
Troy Hertel is an architect with SJCF Architecture and isn’t the same Troy Hertel who is a partner in Barn’rds Restaurant, which is going to open a west-side restaurant just down the road near 37th and Maize Road.
Hertel says she grew up raising cattle, horses and dogs.
She now has an almost 8-year-old weimaraner named Rio and a 16-year-old cockatiel named Larry.
“So his name is Larry Bird.”
Hertel also has a 20-gallon tank of fish and a 5-gallon nursery tank with baby guppies.
Along with the store, she says, “That’s it for right now.”
Petland will have a soft opening on Sept. 2, and a grand opening will follow several weeks later.
