About a decade after originally planned, the owners of Barn’rds Restaurant are making plans to start building a second restaurant just north of 37th and Maize Road.

“We’re in the process of putting all of the drawings together,” says Ken Hertel, who owns the business with his wife, Carol, and son, Troy.

“It’ll take us several months to put that together.”

After preliminary work and construction, Hertel expects it will take a year to a year and a half to open.

The family first began work on the restaurant in 2007.

“And the bottom fell out of the economy, and everything came to a standstill, and we decided we better sit on our hands for a while,” Hertel says. “But there’s been a lot of building going on out there in the last year or two. … The area is developing to the point where we feel comfortable doing business there now. That’s really the bottom line.”

The original Barn’rds, which is known for its roast beef, has been at 2037 N. Woodlawn for 34 years.

In 2007, Hertel told The Eagle he’d never considered a second restaurant, but Wichita State University officials urged him to think about it. The restaurant will open near the school’s west-side campus.

Hertel says the west-side Barn’rds will look a bit different than the east-side one but otherwise will be the same.

He says it’s good to get started again.

“We’re happy to pursue our mission.”
