Two years after opening Handpicked Los Angeles in Old Town, Lauren Mercado is briefly closing her store in preparation to move to new downtown space.
She’s not saying where she’s moving yet, but Mercado says the store will have a new look and a bit of a new focus, too.
“It’s going to be really styling heavy.”
That means bigger fitting rooms that will be large enough for a customer and a stylist.

“So it’ll be a completely personal experience,” Mercado says.
The new space will be about 1,000 square feet compared to what she calls her current “massive” 1,500 square feet.
“It’s really expensive for me quite honestly,” Mercado says of her space at 924 E. Douglas just down from Larkspur Bistro. “I’m just not there yet to be able to handle that big of a store.”
With a smaller space, she says she’ll be able to afford more product to have on display.
“I was really excited about that.”
Mercado, a Wichita native who had been working in the fashion industry in California for eight years before opening her store, returned to Wichita mainly for family reasons.
“It’s been going well enough to where I can stay in Wichita,” she says. “It’s been great.”
With more products, Mercado says she’ll be able to add more sizes and clothing for different age groups, including possibly children.
Saturday is her last day in her Old Town space. Mercado says she’ll share her new address soon. She plans a mid-August opening.
“I’m having a lot of fun with it,” she says of the store.
With a different, more innovative new space, Mercado says she looks forward to “providing a really, really cool new store here in town.”
