On Wednesday, an employee informed a couple seeking wedding flowers that the store was closing and couldn’t accept orders. Another employee confirmed that Friday is the store’s last day.
In 2013, Have You Heard? reported that Koontz was more than $20,000 behind in state sales tax.
At the time, he said his 10,000-square-foot building at 633 N. Broadway, where he moved his shop in 2003, was part of his financial problem.
“Quite honestly, this facility is a dream come true, and I’m glad I did it,” Koontz said then of buying the former house and one-time funeral home. “Regretfully, it probably wasn’t the smartest business move.”
In 2014, Koontz put the building on the market, saying it’s a “fabulous” space but that he wanted “to get out from underneath this.”
He said he was sad that he’d probably have to move out of downtown for the first time.
John T. Arnold Associates still has the property listed for sale.
