Stephan's Press bar at Waterfront to close Aug. 6
If you're one of the people who purchased a Groupon from Press , you'd better use it soon. Aug. 6 is the Waterfront bar's last day in business.
"As of August sixth... something is going to happen there," owner Melad Stephan says.
He has three offers for the space — two are local, one isn't. The potential owners have three similar ideas: One wants a restaurant, one wants a bistro-style business and one wants a combination bar and restaurant.
Stephan isn't sure which one he — or his landlords — will accept. He's hoping to get out of his lease, which still has four and a half years.
Stephan opened Press late last year after previously having his east-side Sabor Latin Bar & Grille in the space.
Before that, another operator had Piztros restaurant there.
So will any bar or restaurant one day do well there?
"It has to be a destination place, and somebody has to promote it and advertise it a lot more than I did," Stephan says. "Just to get people to recognize it and know it's there."
He says Press was not losing money, but he preferred to keep his focus in Old Town where he has Sabor, Oeno Wine Bar , the new Luca and Caffe Moderne , which he's now operating with Janet Rine .
So does that mean he's through with the east side?
"I'm done for a while."
