ATM skimmer found in west Wichita
An automatic teller machine skimming device was found at a Mid American Credit Union branch in Wichita last week, according to the institution’s president.
Jim Holt said a green skimming device was found on May 27 at an ATM at the credit union’s location at 8404 W. Kellogg in west Wichita.
“There were probably 70 transactions all together before the device was found,” Holt said. “About half of those were by our members and half by people with other financial institutions. The police have told us they think this is a device that would have had to have been retrieved to get information from it.”
Holt said Mid American ATMs are usually checked twice daily. He said the device was likely placed on the machine early Friday morning, ahead of the three-day Memorial Day weekend.
Skimmers are devices that are placed over an ATM’s card reader to illegally retrieve data. A Mid American member found the skimmer, Holt said.
Mid American cardholders will receive new cards and numbers and the credit union is working to contact customers of other financial institutions who used the ATM in question on Friday.
Holt said anyone who notices what they think might be a skimmer on an ATM should contact the machine’s financial institution immediately.
